[ Chicago Cultural Center : Domes Restoration ]

The Chicago Cultural Center commissioned Holabird & Root to restore two domes. Holabird & Root led the project team to restore the Louis Comfort Tiffany art glass dome in Preston Bradley Hall, which was completed in June 2008. In addition to the restoration of the art glass and recreation of the historic finishes, Holabird & Root designed a new skylight to replicate the original skylight, which returned natural light and ventilation to the space. The Cultural Center's second art glass dome, which was designed by Healy and Millet for the Grand Army of the Republic, is tentatively scheduled for restoration next year. The Chicago Cultural Center building was originally constructed in 1897 as the Chicago Public Library, and Holabird & Root transformed it into the Cultural Center in 1974.
