Holabird & Root converted this catholic elementary school to an early education and community center for Catholic Charities. While the existing building was structurally sound and had a large gymnasium in excellent condition, major renovations were required to meet ADA requirements and to reorganize access to the various community programs, while maintaining a secure perimeter for the early childhood center. Holabird & Root first became involved with the project through a feasibility analysis looking at space and programmatic requirements. Some of the elementary classrooms were converted into early childhood classrooms by enlarging the spaces and adding toilets, art sinks, and some fixed millwork. Display surfaces and cubbies were designed to support comfortable drop off and pick up activity and communication with parents. A new entry sequence with reception desk, administrative offices, teacher lounge/resource center and warming kitchen, were created.
